Two Killer Shows on the Same Night? What’s a Portland Punk to Do!?!

If you’re into punk rock, it’s Game On in Portland Saturday night, with stone-cold killer shows right across the street from one another at BPM and Geno’s.

BPM is featuring a stacked bill, with Portland’s Euphemia and Freak Phone closing out the night and a couple of acts from Massachusetts (Crimps and Whyte Lipstick) leading off.

Euphemia in action.

Meanwhile, across the street at Geno’s, they’re welcoming a roving mob of Boston punk rock legends to the stage, headed up by Gang Green, alongside The F.U.’s, Tree, and Worm. That’s a bill that’s stacked from top to bottom with absolute kick-ass rock action.

So, what’s a self-respecting local punk rock fan to do?

Well, you can make your own decisions, but here’s how I’d play it:

  • Get tickets to both shows. You can get yer BPM tix here, and yer Geno’s tix here.
  • Start the night at Geno’s. The FU’s are on at 7:45, and they’re a great live band. This is the play. Stick around for Tree because they’re killer, too.
  • Then head across the street to BPM to catch Euphemia. They haven’t played a show since November, and Euphemia frontwoman Gina Brown told me that the band’s pent-up rock energy is gonna explode on Saturday night, they’re so stoked to play. They’re even gonna trot out an L7 cover in honor of Jennifer Finch.
  • Then go back to Geno’s to see Gang Green. Certified punk rock legends, you gotta see ’em to believe ’em.

I know, I know, but what about Freak Phone? Well, they’re dropping a new EP so your best bet is to buy it, listen to it repeatedly, and then catch their next show on Thursday, Aug. 6 at the SPACE Gallery.

There it is. What are you waiting for? Get those tix, and we’ll see you on Congress Street Saturday night.

Euphemia and Freak Phone play BPM on Saturday, Aug. 1, 650 Congress St., Portland, ME. TIX: $12 adv/$15 day of show; 18+

Worm/The FU’s/Tree/Gang Green play Geno’s on Saturday, Aug. 1, 625 Congress St., Portland, ME; TIX: $30; 21+
